Sergeant John Schoppmann

Sergeant John Schoppmann is currently a 12 year veteran in law enforcement and Supervisor in the Counter-terrorism Division training unit. As a certified New York State instructor, he is certified to teach a multitude DHS courses including active shooter response tactics, medical interventions, counter surveillance detection, and behavioral recognition (non-verbal body and facial recognition) and has received extensive training in many police related topics. He has volunteered several years of service as a peer support officer for the organization, “Police Organization Providing Peer Assistance” (POPPA). With certifications in critical incident stress management (CISM) and suicide intervention techniques he speaks regularly to police officers regarding police related stress and suicide prevention. He has participated in many multi-jurisdictional field exercises in the tri-state area and has been privileged to learn from some of the best organizations in the country. He is currently a member of the National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA) and the New York Tactical Officers Association (NYTOA) as well as several tactical medical associations throughout the country.

Prior to taking his oath, John earned his bachelor’s degree in police science from John Jay College of Criminal Justice while employed as a loss prevention officer and NYS security guard. He has also achieved certifications as an interior structural firefighter, hazardous materials technician, and emergency medical technician gaining years of experience in pre-hospital trauma care.
